About us
Sign Craft Collective is a community-driven, Deaf-ledinitiative established to address unemployment, poverty, and social exclusion
among Deaf youth and adults.
Despite completing formal education, many Deaf individualsface barriers to employment due to communication challenges, limited vocationalopportunities, and workplace discrimination. Sign Craft Collective was created to bridge this gap by providing practical skills training, employment pathways, and business development opportunities.
Our flagship program is a woodwork and furniture productionworkshop that serves both as a commercial enterprise and vocational training centre. As the project grows, additional artisan enterprises such as tailoring, basket weaving, beadwork, and fabric dyeing will be introduced. Our Growth Strategy
The Malindi centre serves as the main hub and pilot site, where training methodologies, enterprise models, and operational systems will
be tested, refined, and documented.
Once proven successful, Sign Craft Collective will supportthe establishment of similar Deaf-led centres in other counties, creating
opportunities for thousands of Deaf youth across Kenya. This replication model will strengthen localeconomies while promoting disability inclusion and sustainable livelihoods at scale.TRAINING PROGRAMS
All training programs implemented through Sign CraftCollective are designed to be scalable and replicable. Lessons learned from the
Malindi pilot hub will inform future expansion into other counties, ensuring quality, sustainability, and impact across the country. The Challenge
Why it Matters
In Kenya, many Deaf youth face:
- Limited access to quality education
- High unemployment rates
- Social exclusion
- Workplace discrimination
- Communication barriers
- Limited access to vocational skills
- Poverty and dependency
- Lack of entrepreneurship opportunities
These challenges create cycles of economic vulnerability that prevent Deaf communities from reaching their full potential.
Sign Craft Collective exists to change this reality.
Our Solution
A Three-Pillar Approach
Skills Development
Vocational and artisan training programs that equip Deaf individuals with practical income-generating skills.
Enterprise Development
Supporting Deaf-led businesses through mentorship, production facilities, and market access.
Social Inclusion
Building awareness through sign language education and community engagement.
Empowerment Through Skills
Sign Craft Collective aims to equip Deaf individuals with market-relevant vocational and entrepreneurial skills that enhance employability, self-reliance, and economic independence. The initiative's flagship enterprise is woodwork and furniture production, providing hands-on training in carpentry, furniture design, manufacturing, and business development. As the project grows, additional artisan training programs will be introduced, including basket weaving, beadwork, fabric dyeing, and tailoring, creating diverse livelihood opportunities and supporting the development of sustainable Deaf-led enterprises.
Creating Opportunities & fostering indepedence
We empower Deaf individuals with practical skills, employment pathways, and entrepreneurship opportunities that lead to economic independence and sustainable livelihoods. Starting with carpentry, woodwork, and furniture production in Malindi, Sign Craft Collective is building a scalable model that creates opportunities, strengthens communities, and can be replicated across Kenya.
Sign Language Learning & Inclusion Hub
Sign Craft Collective will establish a Sign Language Learning & Inclusion Hub where Deaf and hearing communities come together to learn, connect, and grow.
Led by Deaf instructors, the hub will offer sign language training to families, educators, businesses, service providers, and community members, promoting communication, accessibility, and understanding.
More than a language program, the hub will foster inclusion, celebrate Deaf culture, create employment opportunities for Deaf trainers, and strengthen community connections.
